Sebago: Sebago:

The 80th Anniversary

Made in USA

Lobsters, lighthouses, lakes…and loafers. That’s Westbrook, Maine, in a nutshell for the uninitiated. What now seems an understatement, actually wasn’t back in 1946.

As America was still busy fighting World War II and Jack Kerouac – whose family originated from nearby New England, just less than an hour drive North West of the Sebago Lake – was helplessly knocking on publishers’ doors to get his first novel out, Sebago was busy laying the foundations to its trailblazing history. The Beat Generation wasn’t a thing yet, but hip students and intellectuals indeed had a thing for high-waist, straight-legged chinos. They were in luck that Sebago would soon start to cater for their sartorial needs, by crafting loafers the old-school way: by hand. It was a hit. By 1952, the production of the now legendary design SebagoMoc peaked at 2,000 pairs a day. This called for a dedicated Maine factory to keep up with demand.

80 years, millions of loafers, dozens and dozens of celebrity endorsements and a hefty dose of succulent lobster rolls on, Sebago celebrates this historical landmark by going back to its roots. Which is, in case you may still be wondering, crafting classic American footwear, this time with an exclusive “Made in USA” Docksides®. No shortcuts, no offshoring, no frills: just thrills. It’s all about honest craftsmanship and a timeless silhouette, made by hand in Maine, using premium US leather.

Sebago: 80 years, millions of loafers, dozens and dozens of celebrity...

However, this is not a nostalgic escapade down memory lane, but a story made of driving through the woods and the highways, sourcing material and chasing expertise, striving for excellence among some of the last-surviving Maine shoemakers, like those at the renowned Rancour factory. There, since 1967, three generations have been hand-sewing shoes using time-honoured techniques. Every hole is individually sliced into the leather, for that flexible feel and flawless fit that only old-fashioned handiwork (absolutely no pre-punching) can deliver. The upper is cut from oiled leather sourced from Milwaukee’s storied Seidel Tannery, softening and aging gracefully with every wear and developing a rich patina that tells its own unique story over time. This is a shoe crafted with integrity, not speed. The words “SEBAGO MADE IN USA”, glimmering in gold leaf on the insole, work as a reminder of this philosophy.

Sebago: A “Made in USA” shoe is a statement, a commitment...

A “Made in USA” shoe is a statement, a commitment for quality in uncertain times, just like they were when Docksides® entered the scene. It was 1970, all the hopes and utopias of the Summer of Love had just deflagrated into a whirlwind made of violence and paranoia. However, far removed from California, from its jet-setting and bloodshed hills of Los Angeles, theatre of the Manson Murders, and the chaos that unfolded at Altamont, amidst mud, Hells Angels and sympathies for the devil, were Maine’s Ivy League campuses and yacht clubs. That was the ideal, loafer-sporting, stomping ground for a new Sebago design, set to become an instant classic. Docksides® found their raison d’être, on the sockless feet of students and sailing rakes, worn with chinos and a varsity knit, carefreely thrown on one’s shoulders or above a button-down Oxford shirt.

Docksides® soon became a quiet yet defining symbol of laid-back East Coast style and preppy fashion: authentically American, unmistakably Sebago. This before crossing the pond and establishing an enduring legacy in the old continent too, where in the 1980s they became an urban staple, for British casuals as much as for the rampant Italian paninari.

Presented in bespoke packaging that nods to the rarity and uniqueness of what’s inside, this latest addition to the Docksides® family is more than just a shoe. It’s a homecoming. A love letter to the soul of New England, anchored in authenticity and stitched with tradition. Don’t despair if you have no occasion (or intention) to set foot on a deck, there always is a good excuse to make a new pair of boat shoes yours. With Docksides®, it's the legacy worn that’ll set you sailing on adventures as timeless (and stylish) as Sebago.
